Are You In Compliance? Are you up to date on your Continuing Education?

Florida insurance agents, customer service reps, and claims adjusters are all required by the State to complete continuing education hours every two years to be in compliance and maintain their licenses. There is a specific required Law & Ethics Update course for your license. Then the remainder of the required hours are considered general electives and can be on any insurance topic. (3-20 Public Adjusters are the only exception as they must take courses specifically approved for 3-20 Public Adjusters.) The exact number of hours required depends on the license and how long you have held it.

New insurance agents and adjusters continuing education

New insurance agents and adjusters who have held their license for less than six years must complete 24 hours of CE every two years, including the Law and Ethics Update course specific to their license. The rest of the CE hours are general electives on any topic.

24 hr CE – 6-20 All-Lines Adjusters Complete CE Bundle (INSCEB009FL24)

24 hr CE – 2-15, 2-14 or 2-40 Health and Life Complete CE Bundle (INSCEB010FL24)

24 hr CE – 2-20 or 20-44 Property and Casualty Complete CE Bundle (INSCEB003FL24)

Continuing Education for experienced insurance agents and adjusters

Experienced insurance agents and adjusters who have held their license for more than six years have their continuing education requirement reduced by four hours for 20 hours of CE, including the Law & Ethics Update course. The rest of the CE hours are general electives on any topic.

Continuing Education for CSRs

CSRs (4-40 Customer Service Representatives) must have 10 hours of CE, regardless of how long you have held that license, including the Law & Ethics Update course. The rest of the CE hours are general electives on any topic.

10 hr CE – Customer Service Representative 4-40 Complete CE Bundle (INSCEB004FL10)

Continuing Education for lifelong agents and adjusters

If you are an agent or adjuster who has held your license for 25 years or more and are a CLU or CPCU, your requirements are 10 hours of CE, including the Law and Ethics course. The rest of the CE hours are general electives on any topic. We do not currently provide bundles for this level. Feel free to choose the individual courses you desire from our catalog.

Continuing Educations courses – a la cart menu

Incidentally, the Law & Ethics Update course requirement is changing from 5 to 4 hours for those whose two-year compliance cycle ENDS on January 1, 2022, or later. The general electives requirement will rise by one hour, keeping the total required hours the same. All our courses and bundles meet the current and future needs of the regulation (any extra Law & Ethics hours will be considered general electives).

Why is Professional Development Important?

Over the last few decades, we have seen a decrease in the number of people who finish school, start their first job, and remain there through retirement. Our marketplaces and business world are growing and changing ever more rapidly. Today’s employees need to have expert knowledge of how to manage stressful situations. We need to be ready on the first day to make a difference and continue improving our appearance and ability to connect throughout our careers.

New OLT Real Estate Real Estate CE and Licensing!

OnLine Training’s OLT Real Estate School has been under development for several years, and we are excited to be able to present to you the first several Real Estate CE and Licensing courses, with more on their way!

OLT Courses are Research-based

OLT’s courses are based on the fundamentals of adult learning and motivational theory. The company’s founder and President, Dr. Terrence R. Redding, Ph.D., has been involved in adult education, training, and training development for over 50 years. Our courses are research-based, easily editable anytime a law changes or a student has a suggestion- and available 24/7/365 anywhere you have internet access. Courses are designed to guide the student most efficiently and effectively through the learning process. Students move sequentially through one topic after another, with frequent lesson questions and quizzes to solidify the individual’s understanding of all the concepts in the course. After completion of a lesson or the entire course, students can return to any lesson or quiz they desire to review or drill concepts on which they may need more work.

What if I want to sell car insurance ?

Sometimes we are asked, “What do I do? I want to sell General Lines – Property and Casualty Insurance?”

To sell Property and Casualty insurance in the State of Florida, you must be licensed (by the State) and also appointed (usually by your employer). You apply with the State for both of these. All licenses require prerequisite pre-licensing education and a State Exam, with some exceptions. All pre-licensing courses require you to purchase the appropriate State study manual. We also have two Designation courses. These particular kinds of pre-licensing course waive the State Exam and do not require the purchase of the State Study manual (although the State still highly recommends you purchase it).

Standard Licenses, and Educational Pre-requisites

There are several options available if you want to sell insurance products in the General Lines or Property and Casualty area.

The quickest way to get your 2-20 General Lines license, but the one with the most study, is our newest 200 hr Prelicensing – General Lines (Property and Casualty) 2-20 Pre-Licensing Course. This 200-hour course covers all areas of Property and Casualty Insurance, both personal and commercial.

If you are not interested in commercial lines of insurance, you might be interested in the 20-44 Personal Lines license. Our 60 hr 20-44 Personal Lines Agent Pre-Licensing course will prepare you for that career.

Possibly the quickest and easiest way is to get the “entry-level” 4-40 Customer Representative license. Take our 40hr 4-40 RCSR – Registered Customer Representative Designation Online Course. You will work under the supervision of a 2-20 General Lines Agent in an entry-level position. Our Designation courses waive the State Exam, saving you time, effort, and money!

If you later want to move up to a full 2-20 license, you don’t have to take the required full 200-hour course if you have been working (and appointed) for a year with a 4-40, 20-44 or 0-55 license. We have an approved 40 hr Pre-licensing – 2-20 CONVERSION COURSE that, along with the 2-20 State Exam, will enable you to move up to the more independent and higher-paying General Lines Agent position.

Do I need to purchase a State study manual if I take your course?

Yes, the State requires all pre-licensing students to purchase their appropriate manuals. We have them at our book-store. Students in Designation courses are not required to buy the State study manual, but the State highly recommends it.

What if I don’t feel I know the material enough after the pre-licensing course?

  1. Make sure you have read and studied the appropriate pages/chapters of your State study manual.
  2. You have a full three months (six months for the full 200-hour General Lines course) to study, so you can review all you want even after taking the Final Exam. Up to three one-month extensions may also be purchased.
  3. We offer a variety of extra study courses designed for you to take after finishing a pre-licensing course to prepare you for the State Exam. Here are a few we recommend:

PE003 – 2-20 and 20-44 Practice Question Generator – This course has over 600 questions based on the latest Florida General Lines and Adjuster Study Manual edition. You may want to use this course to review your knowledge of all sections of the manual or concentrate on just the parts you feel you need to study more.

Florida 2-20 PASSPREP COURSE (GENERAL LINES/PROPERTY & CASUALTY) (INS020FL) – Another question and answer course divided into 13 areas of Property & Casualty with several quizzes in each area.

Florida Property and Casualty Insurance Pass Prep Course (INS002FL) – This unique exam course only exposes you to correct information. Each answer to a question is a correct answer to a question in the course. If you choose the wrong answer for the current question, the response tells you which question that answer does match, which reinforces the correct information throughout each quiz.

The following is a flow chart of the progress from course to license and their common uses. Moving from the 20-44 Personal Lines License or the 4-40 Registered Customer Service Representative to the full 2-20 General Lines License is optional.

“How do I become a Claims Adjuster?”

To sell insurance or work as a claims adjuster in the State of Florida, you must be both licensed (by the State) and appointed (usually by your employer). You apply with the State for both of these. All licenses require prerequisite pre-licensing education and a State Exam, with some exceptions. All pre-licensing courses require you to purchase the appropriate State study manual. We also have two Designation courses; these special kinds of pre-licensing course waive the State Exam and do not require the purchase of the State Study manual (although the State still highly recommends you purchase it).

Common Claims Adjuster Licenses, and Educational Prerequisites

To adjust claims for a company or to be an independent adjuster, you must obtain your 6-20 All-Lines License. You start with our 40-hour Accredited Claims Adjuster Designation course, INS013FL40. Our Designation courses waive the State Exam, saving you time, effort and money!

If you want to become a Public Adjuster, adjusting claims on behalf of and employed by a consumer, you must first gain your 6-20 license (see above), become licensed and appointed by a Public Adjuster or firm as a Public Adjuster Apprentice. You then work for at least six months in this position and then can take the Public Adjuster State Exam and apply for the 3-20 Public Adjusters License.

There is no State Exam required for the 6-20 Adjuster license if you take our designation course. The 3-20 license does require a State Exam, but we currently do not have any study aids for this Exam. You will learn on-the-job in your 31-20 Public Adjuster Appointment working under your 6-20 license.

For further details on any of these licenses or others, contact the Florida Department of Financial Services at (850) 413-3137, or visit https://www.myfloridacfo.com/Division/Agents/Licensure/General/default.htm.

How much does an insurance license cost?

We often get asked, “How much does an insurance license cost?” Besides the cost of your pre-licensing course that you may take with OnLine Training (OLT), there are several fees paid to the state and other entities. You will need to pay them after you finish your course with OLT.

Insurance License Costs

Current costs as of this writing include $50 for your license application, $5 for your license ID, $48.05 for fingerprinting, $44 for your state exam, $60 for your appointment (which may be paid by your employer), and a variety of late fees and penalty fees may be assessed if you don’t maintain your records properly with the state. You can find these listed on the state website at www.myFloridaCFO.com/Division/Agents/Licensure/agents-adjusters/fees.htm.

All fees paid to the state are non-refundable. Some fees are waived for certain military members. For more details on OLT courses and prices, go to https://oltraining.com/ or for Florida specials check out https://fl.oltraining.com/

Insurance Provides Security

Security is peace of mind and freedom from worry. Most of our economic actions are for the satisfaction of something we perceive as a need. One important need is a sense of security for those whose well-being we are responsible for.

There are nearly universal problems such as death, sickness, accidents, and disability that might occur at any time without warning. Usually, these bring serious financial losses, as well as emotional distress within the family.

Insurance has been developed as a practical means to ease part of the economic problems resulting from the above hazards.

Life insurance replaces the loss of the anticipated income of a spouse and/or parent who dies. Health insurance reimburses medical expenses that could be catastrophic. Disability insurance can fill part of the void when one is unable to produce income. Annuities can provide a guaranteed income stream when one ages beyond the capability to produce earned income, or if a person’s other financial resources are exhausted.
